Getting your UAE driving licence as an Indian national is either a 5-day process or a 6-month ordeal, depending entirely on one thing: whether your Indian licence qualifies for direct conversion.
The Direct Conversion Route (The Good News)
UAE recognises driving licences from a list of approved countries and Indian state licences from specific states. If your licence is from:
The direct conversion process:
1. Visit an authorised driving school or RTA office (Emirates Driving Institute, Dubai Driving Centre, or similar)
2. Eye test on the spot (10 minutes)
3. Application fee: approximately AED 600–900
4. Licence issued in 5–7 business days
Done. No theory test, no road test, no driving lessons.
If Your Licence Doesn't Qualify for Direct Conversion
This is the 6-month path. UAE requires the full process: theory test, yard test, and road test — and the failure rates are genuinely high (30–40% for road test first attempt).
The full process:
1. **Register with an RTA-approved driving school** (EDI, DDC, or similar) — AED 4,000–7,000 for the complete package
2. **Eye test** — on the first visit
3. **Theory classes and test** — learn the road signs and rules, multiple choice test
4. **Yard training** — parking, manoeuvring, internal training ground
5. **Road test** — with an RTA examiner in the car
6. Timeline: 3–6 months depending on test slot availability and number of attempts
**Important:** Each failed test requires rebooking (additional fees). Budget AED 1,500–2,000 above the package price for extra attempts if needed.
Transferring Your UAE Licence Back to India
When you eventually return to India, your UAE licence can be converted to an Indian DL at your local RTO — this bypasses the normal test process. Keep your UAE licence valid until you convert it.
