Where to Find Authentic Kerala Food in Every Gulf City

From porotta-beef in Sharjah to fish curry in Salalah — a food map for the homesick.

2026-03-03

The first thing every Malayalee does after landing in the Gulf isn't check into their accommodation or call the office. It's finding the nearest place that serves proper Kerala food. I don't make the rules.

Dubai & Sharjah

This is the undisputed capital of Gulf Malayalam cuisine. The density of Kerala restaurants in Sharjah's Rolla area alone could qualify as a small town in Thrissur district.

**Calicut Paragon** (multiple locations) — The gold standard for Malabar cuisine in the UAE. Their biryani and fish dishes are as close to home as you'll get outside Kerala. Weekend lunch crowds are insane — go early.

**Ente Keralam** (Al Karama, Dubai) — No-frills, honest Kerala food. Their meals (sadya-style) are reliable and affordable. Don't expect ambiance; expect taste.

**Hotel Aryas** (Sharjah/Dubai) — Vegetarian Kerala meals that actually taste right. Their sambar and avial are consistently good. The puttu-kadala in the morning is worth the trip.

**Tip:** For authentic Kerala snacks — pazham pori, unniyappam, sukhiyan — check the small bakeries in International City and Al Qusais. They're often run by Malayalee families and taste like your neighbourhood bakery in Kottayam.

Riyadh & Jeddah

The Saudi Malayalee food scene is concentrated in specific neighborhoods. In Riyadh, head to Al Batha or Olaya for Indian restaurants. In Jeddah, Al Balad has options.

**Malabar Express** (Riyadh) — Probably the most popular Kerala restaurant in the Saudi capital. Biryanis and grills are their strength.

**Zam Zam Mandi** restaurants often have Kerala-style options alongside Yemeni/Arabic cuisine. Worth exploring.

**Saturday/Friday gathering meals** — The real Kerala food in Saudi is at home gatherings. Malayalee community groups organize potluck-style meals, especially during Onam and Vishu. Join your local Kerala association to get on the list.

Kuwait City

**India House** and similar restaurants in Fahaheel and Salmiya serve reliable Kerala meals. The Kuwait Malayalee community is tight-knit, and home cooking circles are common.

Doha

**Paratha King** and **Kerala Kitchen** in Industrial Area and Old Airport serve basic but authentic Kerala meals. Souq Waqif area has some Indian restaurants with Kerala options.

Muscat

Muscat has an excellent Kerala food scene, partly because the Malayalee community here is one of the oldest in the Gulf. **Automatic Restaurant** chains serve South Indian/Kerala food. Ruwi area has the highest concentration of options.

Salalah

Honestly, Salalah might have the best Kerala food in the Gulf relative to its size. The proximity to Kerala (it's closer to Kochi than to Muscat) and the long-standing Malayalee community means the food here is remarkably authentic.

The Universal Truth

No Gulf restaurant will ever match your amma's cooking. Accept this early and you'll be happier. But on those homesick evenings when you need a porotta and beef curry at 10 PM, knowing where to go makes all the difference.
