Qatar Residency Permit (QID): How It Works for Indian Expats

Getting your Qatar ID, medical requirements, the new points-based system, and what changed under Qatar Labour Law amendments.

2026-04-01

Your Qatar ID (QID) is your most important document in Qatar — more important than your passport for daily life. Here's how the system works and what's changed.

What Is the QID?

The Qatar ID (Residence Permit) is the identification card that proves you're legally resident in Qatar. You'll use it for everything: opening a bank account, renting a flat, registering your car, getting a mobile SIM, accessing healthcare, and more. Your physical QID card must be renewed when it expires.

How Your Employer Gets You There

For employment-based visas:

1. Your Qatari employer applies for a work visa on your behalf through the Ministry of Labour's Metrash2 system

2. You receive a work visa (or you enter on a work visa arranged before your arrival)

3. Within 30 days of arrival, your employer initiates the residency permit process

4. You attend the medical examination (blood test, chest X-ray, basic physical)

5. After medical clearance (usually 3–7 days), your QID is processed

6. The physical QID card arrives within 2–3 weeks

**Delays to watch for:** Medical rejections (for conditions like Hepatitis B, HIV, TB) result in deportation. These are non-waivable. If you have any of these conditions, Qatar is not a viable option.

The Absher Equivalent in Qatar: Metrash2

Qatar's government portal (Metrash2) is the primary platform for all PRE/ID-related transactions. Residents (and their employers) use it to:

  • Check residency status and expiry
  • Pay government fees
  • Submit exit permit applications (relevant for domestic workers on kafala)
  • Check medical clearance status
  • Report address changes

  • Download the Metrash2 app on day one. Most Qatar government services now go through this app.

Recent Changes Under Labour Law Reform

**Exit permit eliminated for most workers:** One of the most significant Qatar reforms — the exit permit requirement (where workers needed employer permission to leave the country) was eliminated for most job categories. Domestic workers and some specific contract situations still have restrictions. But for most office and skilled workers, you can travel to India for holidays without employer approval.

**Job mobility:** After 1 year of employment, workers can change employers without the current employer's consent. The process goes through the Ministry of Labour and takes 2–4 weeks. This is a genuine improvement over the previous system.

**Minimum wage:** QAR 1,000 basic + QAR 500 housing + QAR 300 food = QAR 1,800 minimum package, enforceable for all nationalities.

    QID Renewal

QID validity typically matches your employment contract duration (1–3 years). Renewal is the employer's responsibility for employment visas. Key points:

  • Renewal requires an updated medical examination
  • An expired QID results in daily fines (QAR 200/day after a grace period)
  • You cannot travel out of Qatar with an expired QID — you'll be stopped at the airport
  • Track your expiry date actively. Don't rely on your employer to remind you.

  • Family Residency

    Sponsoring family in Qatar requires:

  • Minimum salary of QAR 10,000/month for wife and children (or proof of accommodation included in employment package)
  • Medical examination for family members on arrival
  • School enrollment for children (international or Indian schools available — Indian curriculum CBSE schools are popular)

  • QAR 10,000 minimum is higher than many workers earn — this creates a real separation of families where the worker earns below this threshold.

    When You Leave Qatar

Your QID must be cancelled when you leave permanently. Your employer handles this — it involves returning the QID card, settling any government fees, and getting an exit visa issued. Failure to properly cancel means outstanding obligations remain on your record, which can cause issues if you return to Qatar in the future.
